Why is Hallmarking Mandatory?

The Government of India has made hallmarking mandatory for gold jewelry to protect consumers from adulteration and oblige jewelers to maintain legal standards.

Strict Legal Requirement

It is illegal to manufacture, store, or sell gold artifacts of 14, 18, 20, 22, 23, and 24 carats without a BIS Hallmark. Failure to comply can result in the complete seizure of your inventory and a minimum fine of ₹1,000,000.

Builds Consumer Trust

The BIS Hallmark acts as an official guarantee of purity. Customers actively look for the BIS logo and HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code before making high-value purchases, allowing you to sell at a premium.

Transparent Valuation

A hallmarked item contains the exact declared proportionate content of precious metal. This makes it significantly easier to assess the value of jewelry for bank gold loans, resale, or export purposes.

Specific Exemptions

The government exempts jewelers with an annual turnover below ₹40 Lakhs from mandatory hallmarking. Exemption also applies to articles meant for export, medical/dental uses, and raw gold bullion.
